Lake Maggiore: Arona between art and taste

Arona is one of the well-known touristic destinations on the shores of Lake Maggiore. It is situated on its south -western one, just opposite Angera.
The nice resort has a long lakeside view promenade and important monuments you will discover strolling along its historical centre. Then you will visit a “hidden” farm: a leader concern for the most important Italian cheese ageing and ripening, where you will enjoy a special tasting.

Meeting with an English-speaking driver at Stresa or Baveno and transfer to Arona by private car/minivan. Meeting with a licensed tourist guide in order to enjoy a tour to the historical town centre, situated on the southern shore of Lake Maggiore. A pleasant panoramic walk to admire the well-known Piazza del Popolo famous for its Broletto (old Town Hall), dating back to XV century and then on to St Mary’s Collegiata, a church where the well-known Renaissance-style polyptych by Gaudenzio Ferrari (1511) is kept. Transfer by private car/minivan to the nearby hilly area dominated by “San Carlone”, a big bronze and copper statue portraying St. Charles Borromeo, archbishop of Milan (XVI century), who was born just at Arona. The sculpture was projected by Giovan Battista Crespi, nicknamed “Il Cerano”, and made during XVII century. It is 23- metre high (35-metre high with its pedestal) and tourists are allowed to climb inside it, and to reach the saint’s eyes to enjoy an unusual panoramic view over the lake. Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, who projected Miss Liberty in New York, spent some days at Arona in order to study its structure. Transfer to your last stop at “Luigi Guffanti 1876”, a leader concern for the most important Italian cheese ageing and ripening, such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino and Bitto as well as Gorgonzola and Bettelmatt, some local kinds. Guided tour to the cellars. At the end wine and cheese tasting and possibility of buying some local products. Back to Stresa or Baveno.
