Strhongholds overlooking Lake Maggiore

The Lombard shore of Lake Maggiore is known for its wilder and more rugged landscape, offering a stark contrast to the calmer, more developed western shore. This side of the lake is characterized by steep cliffs, lush forests, and breathtaking natural beauty, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a more authentic and untouched experience. Description

Explore the Wild Lombard Shore of Lake Maggiore
Begin your day meeting your private tour guide at Stresa or Baveno, on Lake Maggiore and drive by private car/minivan to Angera, on the opposite shore of the lakeo, that offers a more dramatic landscape compared to the western shore. Two impressive monuments, a fortress and a convent, stand proudly on the rocks overlooking the lake, representing the ancient civic and religious powers of the region.

Visit Rocca d’Angera and Its Rich History
Explore the Rocca d’Angera, a fortress perched on a rocky spur overlooking Lake Maggiore. Built in the 12th century on the site of a previous structure, the fortress was contested by two noble families—the Torrianis and the Viscontis. The Viscontis’ victory led to extensive renovations, including the stunning Justice Room with frescoes by the anonymous “Angera Master.” The Rocca also houses the Doll and Toy Museum. Afterward, enjoy some leisure time for lunch.

Discover the Serenity of the Hermitage of Saint Catherine
In the afternoon, transfer to Leggiuno by private car/minivan and take a guided tour of the Hermitage of Saint Catherine. Founded in 1170 by merchant Alberto Besozzi after a miraculous survival at sea, this tranquil site is a place of peace and spirituality. The small chapel, built in gratitude to St. Catherine of Alexandria, expanded into a monumental complex by the 14th century. Nestled against a rock near the deepest part of the lake, the hermitage offers a serene atmosphere, perfect for reflection. Return to Stresa/Baveno after this unforgettable experience.
