ARE YOU PLANNING A TRIP TO ITALY THIS SPRING?

Are you planning a trip to Italy this spring?
If you’re visiting on March 22-23, you’re in for a special treat! The 33rd edition of “Giornate FAI di Primavera” (FAI Spring Days) offers a unique opportunity to explore hundreds of Italy’s cultural and historical sites that are usually closed to the public.
WHAT IS FAI?
FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) is the Italian National Trust, a non-profit foundation dedicated to protecting and enhancing Italy’s artistic, natural, and historical heritage. Since its founding in 1975, FAI has rescued, restored, and opened to the public numerous important sites across Italy that might otherwise have been lost to neglect or development.
Today, FAI manages over 70 properties across Italy, from historic villas and castles to gardens, monasteries, and natural areas. Each site tells a unique story about Italy’s rich cultural history and diverse landscapes.
For one weekend each spring, FAI organizes its flagship event, the “Giornate FAI di Primavera.” During these two days, hundreds of cultural sites across Italy – many normally closed to the public – open their doors to visitors. Local volunteers, often students and passionate experts, guide visitors through these hidden gems, sharing stories and insights that bring each location to life.
The event represents a wonderful opportunity for tourists to:
- Discover lesser-known but historically significant sites
- Access private properties not typically open for tours
- Learn about Italian history and culture from knowledgeable local guides
- Experience authentic Italy beyond the usual tourist attractions
Don’t Miss These FAI Treasures:
Villa Panza and Villa del Balbianello
If you’re looking for a more in-depth experience at some of FAI’s most spectacular properties, consider booking a specialized tour at two of their crown jewels:
Villa Panza: Where Contemporary Art Meets History
Located in Varese, just outside Milan, Villa Panza is a stunning 18th-century mansion that houses one of Europe’s most important collections of contemporary American art. The villa’s elegant rooms display works by Dan Flavin, James Turrell, and Robert Irwin, creating a fascinating dialogue between historic architecture and modern light installations.
Villa del Balbianello: A Lake Como Gem
Perched on a wooded peninsula on Lake Como, Villa del Balbianello is perhaps one of the most picturesque locations in all of Italy. With its elegant terraced gardens, stunning views, and exquisite interiors, it’s no wonder this villa has been featured in films like “Casino Royale” and “Star Wars: Episode II.” The villa’s last owner, explorer Guido Monzino, filled it with art and artifacts from his expeditions, creating a fascinating museum of adventure.
