News from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence!
A few days ago Mr. Eike Schmidt, the Uffizi Gallery director, informed the Italian and international press that the Vasari Corridor is going to be reopened.
It is the suspended enclosed passageway connecting Palazzo Vecchio to Pitti Palace – both of them were once the Medicis’ residences – and passing through the Uffizi Gallery and over Ponte Vecchio. It is about one- kilometer- long and it offers a breathtaking view over the city and the Arno River.
Since November 2016 some restoration works have been in progress, due to safety reasons and to a complete reorganization of the collection on display.
The Corridor, which previously housed more than 700 portraits and self-portraits, 30 ancient sculptures and a collection of Greek and Roman inscriptions will be reopened after its long accurate restoration in 2021.
Its reopening is therefore foreseen in two years, with an estimate of 500,000 visitors a year, purchasing a special ticket.
Now visitors are allowed to enter only the first part of the Vasari Corridor, upon reservations: it is the Passage of the Prince and it connects Palazzo Vecchio to the Uffizi Gallery.
